Vray Vs Octane for Max

bread_2 is Vray bread_1 is Octane?
Vray render is better because of the displacement that the octane render does not have.
With displaceD (
http://www.hajimenakamura.com/hajime/cg ... aceD.shtml) you can convert your 'lowpoly' bread into high poly with the same displacement map as you use for your vray render. (dunno how many vram you have left =)).
Etherway bought renders look very good!

yes...but micro poly displacement is the next frontier for gpu based rendering softwares...
the gap is minimum...

agreed, I am very curious how that is going to be implemented. Because almost all cpu renderers subdivides there geometry on rendertime when using displacement, so for a gpu renderer this would cost unbelievable amount of vRam. So do we need cards with huge amount of vRam if we want to use displacement?

no...
because I saw the demo of the next Mudbox release that uses subdivision surfaces.
It creates micropoly displacement in a snap and you can rotate in realtime your painted geometry.
The algorithms exist but Otoy should implement them in the Octane kernel.
Random Control did a different approach to the displacement issue...it works with gpus...

I'm agree with Polder Animation. Viewing the two images in detail It's possible to see little differences in the surface of some bread, but my question is: for the limited height deformation needed, the bump (or normal) effect in Octane should sufficient to be visible in the render, isn't it?
Gabriele, the Octane bread has some bumb applied? (or normal?); difference between the two engine in rendertime?.
For me bread_1 looks better, bread_2 seems to be little desaturated

Also, what are the render times? (And on what kind of hardware is it renderd).

gabriele, Do You render both images on GPU? Or vray was left on CPU mode? =) what are the times?..

vray scene is rendered with cpu
all materials have normal maps
all materials are converted one by one respecting all parameters
vray render took 15 minutes with one single 3.2Ghz processor
Octane for Max rendered for about 50 minutes, PMC 16 bounces 16000 samples, 4 GTX580

What really surprises me is the rendering time, are you sure about 15 min on a single 3.2Gh processor with micro-displacement vs 50 min on 4 GTX580 in non indoor environment
