C4D background object can be used and be useful in some cases - I use different backgrounds techniques according to my needs. I like to blend the background everytime I can to avoid alpha glitches in photoshop.
In the image I show how I use the background object:
it allows you to use 1 environment object for lightning, 1 environment for reflection, refraction, and the C4D background for guess what... background.
I never made it to use 3 Octane environments for light, reflection, refraction and background. It's not perfect but this would be one way to do it. There are other ways.

Is there a way to get C4D light linking working when using Analytic lights?
Seems to only work with Default or Primitive light types.

Also Analytic lights don't seem to work well with Light pass IDs either.
Is there a way to get them working correctly?

Chaos node is broken:
[string "Chaos texture"]:674: No pin "inputRGB" in nodes with type NT_TEX_OSL

Thank you for explanation. I see that you use C4D material for Background object - this is why it doesn't works for me while I was using Octane material.

Anyway month ago I prepared rig for that :

- using one slider you can change sky from clear to cloudy with proper Sun intensity, shadow softness and overall sky color cast
- sliders for rotating whole sky horizontally and vertically
- switchers for using two HDRI maps instead which works with these sliders above
- additional HDRI for reflection only
- additional image as background for reflection only with alpha mask - like city, tree line

- all of them have exposure, saturation, gamma, hue corrections
- all of them you can move up, down, rotate
- for all of them you can add special ground mask to add additional color with corrections

ISSUE: Using latest c4d & octane R4 beta - after changing an area light to an analytical light if you use the octane light manager to make any adjustments or enable/disable a light it reverts to a primitive light type.
