The resulting normals are incorrect when you use the particle orientation and rotate the pointcloud.
We can live with this limitation for now. Well, I can

I just tried out your plugin for the first time. I added a sphere and a plane to the Softimage scene and hit Render Frame.

However, the Octane output shows artifacts:

The object imported with smoothing turned on. When I turn smoothing off in Octane it looks like this:

I'm new to Octane, so this may just be my being clueless?

you need to increase the amount of polygons.

More polygons? But how do other renderers deal with this problem? Also, the normals of this sphere should not be perturbed. It's just a standard sphere with zero modifications.

they all do the same. the issue is just very apparent when you use a sunlight, which is nearly parallel.
Anyways, try rendering a propper scene instead of a sphere on a plane ;)

How would a more complex scene help? I'm trying to find out whether I can use Octane in production, so I need to be aware of issues before trying more complex stuff.

And as far as all renderers doing the same thing, I don't think so. See how mental ray renders the same sphere in sunlight:

try playing with the rayepsilon value in the render kernel to get rid of it.
but be ware that you will get problems on other scenes. (light leaks).

that's why the default rayepsilon is what it is, it's geared towards practical scenes, not low-poly sphere tests.

Modo has the same issue...
