Yes I doubt they will be able to reach the top, wouldn't it just be a case of mounting them where ever they could reach? I know theres proper air flow and technique on placement, but feel like I wouldn't have much choice given the length of the cable.
They should make these things longer with SLI in mind. I feel safe with the 900D being so big, from my observation I shouldn't have too much of a problem with space. I don't quite understand where the screw points are, do the manufacturers build cases and fans at a certain specification? Or do you attach the fans in a certain way.

I was in the same boat as you a few months ago and decided to build a 4x 980ti Hybrid rig. It was the first time I ever built a PC, and was coming from using Macs mostly. It was really easy with the help of some youtube videos, and took me about 8 hours to get up and running.

The Corsair 900D I'm pretty sure is not going to work if you get the hybrid cards. the hoses won't reach the edges of the case... Should be fine for non-hybrid.

The hardest part was finding the right case that could hold 4 hybrids. I ended up getting a Thermaltake x9, which is a cube shaped beast of a case. It's huge, but I was able to fit 3 of the radiator/fans for the GPU + a Corsair 115i Radiator (280mm) on top. And I have one of my GPU radiators on the exhaust on the back of the case.

The hybrids are great! I get ~560 octane bench score with them slightly overclocked and they never run hotter than 50 degrees. Usually around 40 even on full load for hours of rendering. I do animation so there's been times I've been rendering for a few days straight and haven't had any issues with heat.

Also, check out EVGA's web store because I've seen the hybrids going for crazy cheap now and again. They have reference 980ti Bstock cards going for $339 USD (not sure what import duties may do to the price, but you could potentially still save money)

This is great advice man! I'll reconsider the case definitely. I'm really shocked that the 900d isn't adequate, but this case seems better fit for me as it doesn't seem as high, 900d would only just about scrape under having looked at the dimensions.

Haha thanks for sticking in there, feel bad that I've been silenced for a week or so after my Mac packed up again. And no not quite pulled the trigger yet but been researching a lot on my phone. It's actually impossible to get hold of new Hybrid 980tis now, and I was only going to stick 2 in to start with so availability is going to get less and less. I'm thinking, or feel a little forced at the moment in going for the 1080 hybrids.

I think the previous build was slightly better. The 5930k (or 6850k if you want the latest iteration) is better then a 6700k, you are going to need the extra pci-lanes as you are planning to use 4 gpus. If you go with x99 make sure to get 4 sticks of ram not 2, as the ram on that platform is quad chanell. Make sure to get a motherboard with a good pci-e setup, 'cause you want all your cards to run at 8x....actually ther's a lot more to consider, i suggest to dig in to the forums, ther's plenty of usefull informations from other users.

Thanks for the advice. Is the processor better as in faster? Is the 6 core faster than the Quad Core?

Could you suggest some mother boards as Im at a dead end, they either have less PCI slots or incompatibilities with the hardware. I guess I have a $400-$450 budget for the motherboard.

I thought this would be easier, not like I'm scrimping on budget and asking for advice on the ultimate rig for a $800 budget.

a 6 cores cpu is faster only if the program you work with will use all the available cores, in that case yes, way faster.

Btw, with the advent of the gtx 10 series, nvidia is not officially supporting 3 and 4 way sli anymore, so motherboards manufacturers are responding accordingly. It translates in to: no 4 way sli capable mobos in the recent x99 refresh (except for the asus rampage edition 10, but...600+ euro? LOL)
therefor, if you want to use the latest 68xx series cpu, almost any motherboard will need a bios update. If you can cope with a 59xx or 3 gpus it will be much easier

On the cheap side you can get a Gigabyte : GA x99P sli - here a review : http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/ha ... eview.html it goes for 240 Euro, you may or may not need a bios update for Broadwell-e support (random, it depends on the revision, 1.0 will need the udate etc.) also i don't like the molex at the bottom of the board for the pci-e extra power.

Or asrock WS-E or (model 10G if you need uber/double/bruce-lee ethernet ports. this one is my favorite ) it goes for 400+ euros, it is durable, most of the components are server grade, it supports broadwell-e with a bios update...and molex again -.-

Or EVGA FTW K - again bios flash for broadwell, feature packed, very stable, average bios.

Or Asus X99 WS need a bios update as well fo broadwell, no molex here, just additional 4 pin power cable. Simply one of the best mobos out there. Be aware of the horrible asus RMA policy/service tho, in case of problems (not joking, asus = no customer care) same price range as the asrock ws

Or Supermicro....something, just dig in their website, among the plethora of models you'll find one.

some mobos can be flashed using an usb stick, you won't need a cpu to be installed. Some other won't even reach the bios if ther's no compatible cpu installed, in this case if you don't have a 5xxx chip at home, i guess you'll need your reseller to flash it for you. Do some research for each model. Also consider, all the above mobos are pretty old (i think the most recent is the Gigabyte) so on some models you won't have the latest goodies, usb 3.1 and type C, thunderbolt etc.

if you decide to use a 5930k instead of a 6850k you can use any of the above mentioned mobos without any bios update; broadwell is slightly better then haswell when it comes to ipc. Haswell is 100$ cheaper, is older, bigger die size, almost same power efficency, and is a better overclocker (according to tom's HW); but still you are getting an old gen processor.

oh nice mobo you have there, but isn't that for V3's ? with some bios upgrade can accomodate v4's?

I am running 7 gpus on the rack series and v4 - yes update bios.

PSU - 1600W is enough for 7x1080, so 1200W is ok. But if you can afford get 1600W titanium.
