Not basically, it is. They even left the akitio logo and serial number on the bottom of the device.

Hi,

I have been considering Bizon when GTX 1080 will comes out, but how well your single 980 Ti is performing with Octane3? Fast enough or would you need another one or more? After seeing people having 4 GPUs and more, I just wonder if single GPU is enough.

Thanks!

Few shots from latest build I've done recently:
(modified akitio with paint job + SFXL PSU + cable mod)
DIY eGPU Akitio tomGlimps.jpg
24 cable jumper & barel plug were made to avoid some mess.
akitio DIY eGPU tomGlimps.jpg
what really surprised, was quick painjob =)
matched original TitanX color & texture perfectly.

Take a look at my signature, I'm running (4) GPUs, not just the external.

Well, good for you!

Have you tried Octane without slave GPUs? How well single eGPU will perform? I know after having 4 GPUs running for you, single eGPU isn't much, but still.
As I mentioned I'm looking for GTX 1080 with Bizon setup, but not sure if that would be enough for simple animation renders.

Cheers!

@ juhatakabe no one is goign to answer this questions for You, 'cos projects differ.. for seme even 4GPUs are too little. So try & if You do not like, You can sell Your device, as I'm sure there will be those who are interested in getting one. 1080 are not yet supported, no One knows when for sure.. & when OctaneRender will support them,, there will be MacOS issues - what I want to say, stick with 980Ti - the best priece You can get (even something second hand). Performance difference will not be that huge to be noticed, while 1080s price will be unreasonably high before all this hype will be gone.

if You need a kick, simply get second licence (standalone) & build render node with multiple GPUs if needed.

@glimpse is right, it all depends on what you're working on. What I can say, is that a eGPU does not work any slower then an internal or a slave does. See a post with some numbers I put together below.
natemac00 wrote:So I just wanted to share some numbers I just ran. I was reading on some other forms about an eGPU not performing to par.

GPU: MSI GTX 980 Ti 6GD5 V1 PCIE

Computer 1: Win 10 64-PC |3.2GHz 4-Core i5-6500 | 16GB DDR4 | Internal PCIe
Computer 2: '13 Mac Pro | 2.7GHz 12-Core Xeon E5 | 64GB DDR3 | 10.11.3 | eGPU
Computer 3: '09 Mac Pro | 2x 2.6GHz 4-Core Xeon | 24GB DDR3 | 10.11.3 | Internal PCIe

PC Average: 117.097 (117.18 | 116.61 | 117.50)
'13 Mac Average: 111.847 (116.15 | 111.30 | 108.09)
'09 Mac Average: 117.86 (118.62 | 117.62 | 117.34)

So if our PC is our baseline the eGPU is running at 96% efficiency. I think that's pretty negligible in performance.
It's a linear speed increase depending on the GPUs you have.
We are holding off on buying any more 980Ti's to see what will happen with the 1080s once they come out. I'm not even sure how the mixture of GPU architectures will effect things (Maxwell & Pascal) Octane. I would hold off if you can otherwise, 980Ti will start going down in price and at the moment it is the best cost to performance GPU you can buy out there for Octane. There is always going to be something better around the corner. At some point you gotta just jump in.

@glimpse by not supported, do you mean that Octane is not supporting new GPU or do you mean eGPU tech side?
@natemac00 thanks for the comparison. I'm not in hurry so I will wait when GTX 1080 is released, supported and tested by others before I make my conclusion.

Cheers!

Pascal GPU architecture is not a supported in Octane yet, once the card is actually released, they can test the GPU and get it supported, it's just how soon that might happen this is the question.
I don't know what the Mac OS issues he's talking about though, I've never had any issues and I'm not moving away from Mac anytime soon.

Yes, this is my question too. :-) I actually want to buy some GPUs.

How long does it normally takes? Two weeks, two month, a year?
