After stripping down to just one card, the script runs. And boy is it so MUCH simpler than doing it manually!

Thanks so much for this!

I booted a MacBook Air into Recovery mode and did csrutil disable and restarted to run the script. So now I have eGPU running happily over thunderbolt on a MacBook Air running El Cap 10.11.2

i got the same one card at a time message.

Works fine with one card... when I put the other one back it does not boot... were you able to get both cards running.

Mine are identical cards.

thanks

Peter, yes it works with two cards installed. I have two gtx 780. No issues on the MBA on OS X 10.11.2

The script doesn't work on my 2012 MBP with a gtx 650m on OS X 10.10.5 it may be a conflict between Nvidia drivers and the latest Yosemite Security update. I had to uninstall the scripts and went back to the manual method.

Thanks man I will try it again and see if it was temporary

Hey everyone.

This is my first attempt at building an EGPU setup. The task has proven a bit more difficult than imagined. Currently, I am having a hard time getting my Corsair RM 1000 to power the Titan X. I understand that the Corsair fan won't turn on without stress, but I am unable to get the Titan X fan to spin as well, or show any indication of turning on.

My specs are:

Akittio Thunder 2
PCIE Powered Flexible Extender Cable
Corsair RM 1000
Titan X
MBP 2014

Thanks!

try adjusting the fanspeed manually with a program like msi afterburner or evga precision
when i connected a gtx960 through e.c. i also noticed 0 fanspeeds, thinking it wasnt working, but win7 recognised it. Then when rendering I just turned the fans on and it worked flawlessly

have You shorten 24pin cable?

Wouldn't that require running/installing bootcamp? I am attempting to follow this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfKb8TcHDkI
I have purchased all of the same equipment, with the exception of a TitanX instead of Z. However, his video doesn't detail the process of physically setting everything up.

and Tom, the Corsair RM came with a 24 pin, as well as everything else. Currently I am running an 8 Pin that splits to two 6+2 Pins (attached into the Titan, with the additional 2pins hanging off to the side)
I noticed that when running that to the GPU, as well as attaching the 24 Pin and using the paperclip method on that, the PSU will click when flipped on. (So far thats the only indication of running power, as the Corsair's fan won't run without stress)

Thank you everyone for the replies, I appreciate it so much.

Alright, small update. I discovered that by powering on the akitio, the GPU card was able to power on. (I suspect by pulling through the Powered Riser) However, I understand that the Akitio itself doesn't supply ample enough power, thus the need for the Corsair RM PSU. I am wondering if I will need to create a Molex-barrel adapter, in order to transfer power from the PSU to the Riser, and in turn the GPU? I have attached a photograph for clarification.

Also, I've noticed that my Molex appears different, in that it doesn't provide a 4-pin converter. Is this the issue?

First of all, THANK YOU to those involved in figuring out this setup. Back in December, I read every single post in this thread, twice over, and it gave me enough confidence to get what I needed to get up and running with Octane and my Late 2013 Mac Pro.

Instead of starting a new thread, I figured I'd ask here as to any recommendations for getting this type of setup into a proper case. I'm concerned about dust and the exposure of the setup in general. I see quite a few threads about multi-gpu systems and upgrading existing Windows systems, but I'd rather focus (in the meantime) about the next phase of this eGPU.

Tom made a point to me earlier this week that there are different factors to consider: budget, cooling, power, etc. Let's say, for argument's sake, we want to get this into a nice case that's air-cooled, and would support 2-4 cards. Nothing fancy. What are the things to consider?
  • - What motherboard would you get, and why would board A be better than board B?
  • - Would you need to get RAM for a "headless" system?
  • - What cpu and how much RAM would you get (if needed)?
  • - Would the motherboard have to have Thunderbolt interfaces to replace the gfx card's connection to the Akitio board?
I also use a Late 2013 Mac Pro at work and would ultimately like to have an eGPU setup there, but I need to understand how this works and how much it'd cost, so I'm willing to spend my personal time and money to evaluate and learn this all at home first. Just as an FYI, I have no experience building PCs. I've primarily owned Macs, so I've never needed to buy a motherboard or PSU. In fact, the last time I bought a CPU was a Sonnet CPU upgrade for my Quicksilver G4! Remember those?

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

[EDIT] I just wanted to add that about a month ago, I was able to quickly turn around an animation project I had at work using C4D, TurbulenceFD, and Octane v3's volumetric rendering capabilities. If it wasn't for this eGPU, that project probably would've ended up looking bad, so thank you all again for Mac eGPU efforts.
