Is there a reason why gradients in the IPR look worse than in Mplay? If I do mplay snapshot the gradient looks good, while in the IPR I can see the banding
Haven't noticed anything like that, does it show up in a screenshot? How does the saved output look?

I will check though; does it happen in a procedural gradient or are you using a texture?

Currently I am using "generate gradient" node, so procedurally, saved result looks clean. Haven't tried with a texture, but usually if a texture is 16bit it should be fine.

Could the performance with instances in Octane be improved? Currently besides the bug I reported above with instance, it's pretty hard to work in the IPR when there are instances in the scene, first of instances don't even update when moving to a different frame or like changing the shape of an instanced object etc., and with all that "not updating" it still manages to drag down the performance of the IPR the way I can't even drag lights or change parameters on the lights quickly because after each parameter change IPR "thinks" and "updates" something to the instances when I did nothing to them.

I will chat to our dev about this. Do you have a scene we can use to profile this performance issue?

Thanks!

Yeah I'll collect some demo project files for these specific bugs to troubleshoot. Just a little later this month.

Great thanks, it will help a lot in tracking down the issue.

Btw on that gradient banding problem in the IPR. I am genuinely confused why right now I cannot see any banding in the IPR. Might track it down later, 'cause I didn't change version or configurations, so weird. Looking at the same gradient now it looks perfect and uncompressed.

Edit: ok it's def there I just need to sit under darker lighting in my room to see the banding in IPR

Ah ok, I didn't see any banding but will double check a bit later today. Thanks!

Turn dithering on the imager

Hi thanks for the tip, I know about dithering, it's not the case here, it just seems that IPR has some compression happening and dithering doesn't help in this case, it sure can help for final exr output, not in the IPR though.
