It`s not related to low or high priority of the graphic cards, I even tried to deselect cards and tested one by one.
Definitely some problem with rgb image inside environment either in Octane sun or regular environment tab.
So max freezes for about 5 mins after that it become unfrozeen but the moment I change any parameter in rgb image (gamma, power etc.) max freezes again for 5 mins.
I must say this happens unrelated to image (hdr) inside rgb image because freeze even without any image loaded in rgb image.

Ok so I tested all versions of Octane to see where this bug appears for first time and concluded that last working version is OctaneRender® for 3ds max® v3.03.2 - 4.10, from OctaneRender® for 3ds max® v3.03.2 - 4.11 - OctaneRender® for 3ds max® v3.03.4 - 4.20 [TEST] there is a bug.

hello mark0spasic and octane team . i also am seeing this bug. it happens when i load hdri or exr or jpg into sun texture and instance drag into material editor.
this is not a card priority issue in my testing
and it def was not happening in previous builds

im using OctaneRender_for_3ds_Max_3.03.4_-_4.21

here is a sample scene with a jpg instead of hdr (same bug seen with jpg)

Hi abowen1,
I tested your files, it seems to work.
I video recorded about the test and attached it.
I do not think the issue depends on Octane,
It could be quite a latency caused by something else in windows ..?

this is something with octane i am sure . as it wasnt there before and system hasnt changed ... i think you forgot the attachment can u please resend ...and i will continue to look into issue here

updated the drivers to latest versions and still experiencing the issue with the software freezing if i select the material slot with the hdri sun texture instance (or copy). is there anything you can suggest ?

Sorry for not answering earlier in OctaneRender® for 3ds max® v3.03.4 - 4.21 I still have this problem, when I open your test scene my max freezes after I click on material editor.

Problem is still present in OctaneRender® for 3ds max® v3.03.4 - 4.22 [TEST] .
