The mouse wheel changes only the percent of view (Size, see screenshot), nothing else. I have tried the wheel, the pressed wheel while rolling, right mouse button + wheel, left mouse button + wheel, middle mouse button + wheel, shift + wheel, control + wheel, cmd + wheel and so on. But always the percentage is changing.
Yes, that is the intended functionality. If you mouse-wheel to set the percentage to it's LOWEST value, the entire render bitmap should be shown. Then when you mousewheel scroll to zoom - it should zoom in on your mouse position.

I wonder if maybe you have your OSX mouse controls setup differently to mine, which is causing the issue?

Correct, but the render size does not change in this way.

I am using the 3Dconnexion CAD Mouse with default settings.

I investigated some new relationship on this issue:
This problem appears only when selecting alpha channel and using a background image. Then the viewport size fits to the size ratio of the background image instead of the selected format! But the saved result has the full size.

:-)

I need renderings with a indirect lightning from the ground, but without the ground. I need cut out objects on white. So I loaded a white image into the background.

Feature request:
It would be a great help to set the background color when using the alpha channel, instead of loading background images.

Yes, when you assign a background image, the render image in the viewport is cropped to the size of the background image - which is why you are having an issue.

The background image is NOT used in the calculation of render samples - it is for visualisation only, and the background image is not saved with the Octane render. So for what you are trying to do I don't think your should be using a background image.

I would not use a background image, but I do not like the transparency grid when working in renderings. So, it should be possible to set the grid to totally white or a custom color like in Photoshop.

I will see if I can add an option to the preferences to switch from the checkerboard background to a solid color.
