here is a bit of explanation: (OTOY's twitter stream after posting Renegatt's demo)
@OTOY Aug 26
@RenegattSoft @tomglimps nice demo, but this will likely end up bricking your octane license when used in the wild. It violates the EULA.
OTOY is talking about new terms being written into EULA somewhere ~ the time when v2.0 was released
@OTOY Aug 26
@tomglimps @RenegattSoft also want to say, very nice work Renegatt has done - maybe we could work on supporting it officially down the line.
after these there were no official comments on this topic & for understandable reasons Renegatt doesn't comment on these topics too (probably before making some sort of a deal with OTOY..)
the conversation on this topic ended up about new licences, that will be some day - might be very much the case, that person who was communicating from OTOY's side, may not have any more information on this topic by that time (as marketing decisions is probably made by someone else).
Half a Year later we are still looking for new licences (probably with different terms) that will allow such things (like running OctaneRender on vGPUs too =) for now, let's recap, what was said: You're not allowed to use Octane with such solution
(just an information).

Yes it workED - a while ago (even with more than 12 GPUs, that is current limmit of Octane network rendering even if You have money to buy extra gear & licences =)
The whole point is that we are NOT ALLOWED to use OctaneRender with virtual GPUs (that Renegatt software provides =) -
that's the main problem =) (at least these were silent changes with versio 2.0 - not making a buzz, just informing those who haven't read). Voiding EULA could "brick Your licence" (whatever that means) -qoute might not be 100% exact- as I understand Your simply not allowed to that & Your licence might be suspended =) however noOne talks or explain this.
To @Gabriel..I wouldn't bet my money on that..but let's see how hat goes =)
they also forbidden to sale your license....
this point is not allowed in the EU!

I'm pretty sure OTOY don't care about that as they are not located in EU.
You agreed to the license agreement when you bought the software. So even if you are in EU and - legally or not - sells the software but break the license agreement, I'm pretty sure that they would just pull the plug to the software - if they find out you sold it.

All this stuff is multiple layers of grey. Saying you cannot use virtualised GPUs sounds monopolistic to me - anyone remember what happened with MS and Explorer?
What jurisdiction is the EULA within? Otoy NZ is a NZ company, so guessing it is NZ law?

nonono....if u sell to the Eu, u have to
accept the european rights.
and they said, i can sell all the time my Software!
for example:
Fryrender....some user resisted to the license agreement from randomcontrol and they get in court right.

Does that mean it´s technically possible but just not allowed?
By the way:
Arion is sooo slow compared to Octane. What Arion is doing on 16 GPU, Octane does with 3 or 4...

The whole network licensing thing makes it really hard to actually use network rendering. To buy a whole standalone license always feels like wasting money. Not being able to sell the licenses when you don't need them anymore makes it even more bitter. I actually didn't use network rendering so far because of it.

The worst bit about Network rendering is updating. We use different Octane versions for different projects so when it comes to setting up slaves you you forget to deactivate slaves connected to a master those slaves are now useless until you install that version of octane again and deactivate them.It would be nice if they fixed that. Even with custom scripts and plugins we spend more time working on technical issues than rendering. In the end it doesn't save all that much time than it does to use V-Ray.
