Dissolve is handy when you have multiple copies of a single lumi panel and want to reduce the brightness of one of them.
Given my tests, you'll probably get better render speeds but not using dissolve, but rather creating separate polys for varying luminance levels.

Yeah you're probably right. I normally only do this as a last minute tweak before rendering.
