gtx 580 has 1500 Mb which is not that much.
some 580 has 3GB
True but I can only swap for a 1500 Mb version.
Anyway I got my gpu monitor up. It says I have over 300 Mb free. Where is it going? I also tried to reduce my screen resolution to free up vram, though I don't think that did anything.

3dsmax always prevent octane from using whole GPU memory.

Though slightly off topic now, I am interested in installing a second gtx 570 to connect in sli with my current card. I'm a noob when it comes to this, but even though I have another pci slot the gap looks super tight - so just wondering is that perfectly normal to run two cards so tightly together?
Bottom view with PCI visible underneath the current gpu.

Also I have a gtx 550ti someone gave me as they upgraded. Can I run the 550ti in conjunction with my 570 in sli or can I only run two 570's together? Even though the 550 ti has hardly any cuda cores, it should still double my memory, correct?

If it doesn't block airflow completely it is ok.
don't use sli if you are going to use octane.
in case of several GPU octane doesn't have any extra memory benefits.

Thanks for the reply but I don't fully understand. Why not use sli? Is it better to run cards independently? Why are there no extra memory benefits? Are you saying the only point in having a second graphics card is to increase render speed via cuda cores?

Right I see! So the best way to increase vram in my case would be to buy a single gtx 580 with 3gb?

Or even Titan which is 2 times faster then 580 and has 6Gb.

Thanks for your replies Karba and Bicket. Makes more sense now!
