I was searching the net for Vram monitoring and found GPU-Z.

A very useful tool for me right now. Didn't know that Vue used 540MB on that scene I used

No wonder Octane crashed. Poser on the other hand only used 240MB, but I can adjust the texture sizes to 128 in the preview, so I can get it as low as 80MB leaving me with 1200MB of fun in Octane

This has really helped me with what I can load and what I can not load in Octane.
unfortunately there is nothing that i know of that we can do about this.
i can't see what else a GPU is used for and neither can i modify other applications data, as that would cause them to crash, or even the OS.
Another reason to use octane on a 2nd headless GPU.

You might be interested in trying out GameBooster:

With only Chrome opened, my GPU was idling at 140MB of VRAM usage according to GPU-Z. After switching to "Gaming Mode" it's now at 80MB. I have to imagine that turning off Windows Aero will have the same effect on it's own.

I already have a very optimized Vista. Having Internet Explore, Windows mail and total commander running only uses a total of 47MB Vram. The problem will first start to show when you start your 3D applications and if there is any chance to reduce texture sizes in those apps, then it's a good place to start.

Hello,
great tool, GPU-Z, thanks for the link.
I never thought about shutting down Poser while using Octane.
Luckily it's not as bad as Vue, I got 99 MB used with Opera (20 tabs open)
and Poser Pro 2010 open (on a medium-complex scene), it went back to
18 MB when I shut down Poser.
(This test done on my older machine, running XP64)
Best regards,
Michael

You can get Poser Pro 2010 to use very little Vram. Just turn down the texture size in the preview under Render Settings/Preview and use the Texture Display slider.
