Thnx guys for your responds trying to help
@Face (and other who like to try)..

@roeland
I checked the "use OBJ vertex normals if supplied" and it is enabled
@steveps3
I checked the smooth enable, but I don't dare to bet cos maybe I missed oa setting
@kavorka
I tried to check the model and could not see if the vertices are not welded together

Have you tried importing the mesh with the "interpolate using smooth groups" option there?
Else, I would suggest to import the .obj in Blender, clean the mesh, enable smoothing and then use Blender exporter to export to Octane.
EDIT: typo

I opened it up in Modo, ran a mesh clean up and it had to weld a lot of vertices.
So that's probably the problem.

Yes i tried, did not help.
And yes, good suggestion, i'll try to find out if it is possible to clean mesh in c4d or in sketchup.
Thanx, I got homework to do and will get back when next wtep is made hopefully.
Otherwise I'll take a look at Blender, only learned about the existence a while ago.
Maybe I made the wrong choice buying c4d while ago, maybe not

I'll find out in time.
Greetz and tnx for info and suggestions

In sketchup, double click on the candle body or pick all the faces of the candle. Then right click and pick smooth surface. Increase value. This might help.

Sadly not.. That was the first thing I tried before posting here.
