can you try the following:

when importing,
set 'use smoothgroups' on, and 'use vertex normals' off.
then export from max, and export with smoothgroups.
render in octane with smooth enabled on the material.

Still same results :S..
it shouldnt matter anyway cus the whole object is under one smoothing group.

don't you have an auto-smooth like functionality in max ?

i didnt use the auto smooth, because its a "low poly" model, and modelled in a way that when everything is smoothed, it looks like theres bevelled edges when physically its sharp edges.

hey,

i looked at your obj file and you're model is like 10 kilometers long.
you should also force output of triangles, and solve your scaling problem, that's likely the cause.

if the shading is incorrect even with no smoothing, it's likely due to it having the wrong scale...

lol right...... when i imported the file back into a blank max file, the units come back correct, with units set to meters.
so ive exported as triangles and imported as millimetres...... and i cant find the model.... lol it says theres triangles in the scene but i cant find it ...

so ive gone back to max, scaled it down to 0.1 of original and imported it back in as meters..... still the same problem :(

0.1 won't solve the issue, as i said, the difference is much bigger.

please post a part of your object as a .max (zipped) file and i'll ask [gk] or KilaD to show you the right way to export it.
(or PM it to me if you don't want to have it in public.)

ive scaled it down some more.... so in max it displays as 0.004m
when imported into octane.... again i cant find the model :S
