yeah this is really the best of both worlds quite honestly a hybrid set up is great!

it takes away the GPU from being the main limiting problem on all macs “foot dragging by Apple for 10 years“ that has held us back for so long even on their high end m3 machines!! (better but still meh for the price)

It kind of takes that problem of gpu power out of the equation and “it just works“

I even was able to cancel my redshift license because it’s so clunky over there on the other side of the fence

you have to either use deadline or team-render

it’s a pain in the ass Octane “just works“ & i don’t even have to interact with the pc - it is running headless (hdmi loopback dongle) - just install the octane daemon and setup the network.

Otoy needs to really hype this fact up!!!

I suspect once we get to M4/5 era ….we might not need the pc so much….time will tell

For now “hybrid” is the way to go!!

Hello

I use Mac pro 2019 with two gpu (Radeon pro vega 2 & rx 6900xt)
and I use cinema 4d 2024.

but I can't use octane X with a error massage "There is no GPU device which is selected"

How can I fix this error.

That's a great demo Padi - I am now convinced! Just need to decide whether to get an M1 or M2 now or wait until the M3 Ultra drops...

Question about mac/pc network rendering: Does Octane use the unified memory from the mac i.e. up to 128GB or is it restricted to the card(s) in the PC i.e. 24GB on a 3090/4090?

Hi,
since the mac is the primary workstation, it is using the max VRAM with unified memory in Apple Silicon.
If the scene goes over ~20GB of used VRAM, the Render-Node can fail, but you can enable the Out-of-core in the Render-Node, to have more room.
Obviously, always better to have the whole scene completely loaded in VRAM, without Out-of-core active.

ciao,
Beppe

Hey all, is there anywhere I can see Octane Bench results for MacBook Pros running the base M3, vs the M3 Pro and Max?

I just bought an M3 MacBook Air for personal use (not rendering) but am wondering if I should return it and go for a MacBook Pro with the M3 Max chip. I'd then be able to use it for 3D work when I'm 'on the go'. I use a PC for my 3D work, with 2 x 3090s. I loaded a scene which takes 28 seconds for my PC to render a frame of... it took my M3 MacBook Air 44 minutes! So unless the M3 Max is vastly superior then I'd probably stick with the MacBook Air and rule out doing much/any 3D work on it. Thanks!

Hi,
please follow this link and share your result with M3 base, and I'll update the chart.

M3 Max result is ~15".

Anyway, please consider that Apple Silicon is always slower in rendering, compared with CUDA, but it is faster in all the other tasks (eg AI Denoiser), and with 2024.1-Alpha versions you can use both 2x RTX 3090 via Net render.

@shtl_1: sorry I have wrongly shared the Win version, I have corrected the link in my original post.
If c4doctane is not loaded, it means that you need to upgrade C4D to R2023.2 build, or c4doctane plugin cannot work correctly, please go to your MyMaxon/Downloads page and download the update.

ciao,
Beppe

Thanks!

Roughly more than 3x faster than M1 base!

Here is the updated chart:
