every single tutorial I've seen for creating a mesh that emits light automatically has this "cast illumination" check box in the blackbody emission attributes. What am i doing wrong?

Nothing! Parameters updated, "visible in diffuse" is similar parameter. Others are bonus.

Hi,
the emission node has been updated from 3.07:
viewtopic.php?f=24&t=62395So probably the tutorials you are following are older than 3.07.
It depends from the materials in scene, try also Visible on Specular.
ciao Beppe
