Morning everyone,
I would first like to introduce myself to this great community; though I have been using octane, this is my first post on the forums. I am a Canadian Motion designer and Cinematographer, based in Vancouver.
I wanted to reach out to the powers that be to get some advice on a build I am going forward with. The plan is to take my current rig. (i7-5820k, Two 1080 FE, 64 GB RAM, X99 II, SSD 960 evo) and build a second render rig to help manage production. I will be also exploring the option of also buying a small server for storage, networking and being self significant, at my residence(studio).
The mindset behind this rig is to aim for the future, increasing production by 200%+ and allowing me to take on larger, more "Small Studio" size projects. Because, due to the travel ban and VISA changes in the US, I am having to increase my capacity and capability to hold me over until the storm passes and I can move to LA.
My current build is https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Xzy7qk
- Budget $5000+.
- I am on the fence about the new i7-6950k or i7-6900k. I do bounce from C4D's physical render to Octane quite a bit, depending on the project. A greater core count was something I wanted to consider; and at half the price of the Xeons line, I felt it was something to consider.
- Two 1080 TIs is a solid place to start, room for more with the build.
- 64 GB of ram, depending on core count (3GB per core).
- X99 to allow for water cooling, better PCI Express lane control, DDR4, etc.
- Case? - I am completely open on case suggestions, Water cooling is almost inevitable, though I have little experience with custom water cooling.
- one or two M.2 SSD storage devices.
- SuperNova 1000w PS
Also, I wanted to hear how some of you guys are fascinating your production with two or three rigs in house. What type of server, if necessary, is needed for rig to rig communication.
Any advice, suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated. I try to keep myself as informed and educated as I can but I differ to those far closer to the source.
Kind regards,
Sacha
