im seeing used 980ti cards here in canada on kijiji.ca, a popular local classifieds site we use, for 380 to 500 canadian dollars. The way i see it is that if it runs close to speed of a 1080, I can buy used, and then sell used(when brigade octane is released or when i want to upgrade cards again not losing too much money on the cards since i already bought used. Also one thing to note is the depreciation on these cards seems to be dropping fast due to new cards being released every year, computer technology in general. So i dont know if i see full value in buying brand new cards, also knowing im going to void the warranty when watercooling AND octane brigade is going to come out soon which supposedly can run very fast on one or two cards im ASSUMING.

Im not a pro with all this, and im still learning, so regarding the temperatures running hot, running stock, why does it matter if render speeds are the same?

I'm in the same case.
I can buy the 980ti for 300€ and 1080 for 450€ (used one) and 1080ti are to high (825€)
I have compare my scene with the lastest version 3.06 test 3 on a :
- Titan Black : 4min46
- 1080 : 3min29
- 980ti from a friend : 3min57
- 1080ti (or titanXP) estimated : 2min38

So what is the choice for today ?

980ti for speed and 1080 for VRAM and power consumption ?

Edit: I just bought a 980ti and make some overclock and result with a bench of 3min20. So better than the 1080 ! and also overclock the 1080 (aircooling) and get 3min15.

--> so 980ti is still the best choice for speed (and price)

Hi,
I'm still playing with the 1080 and made comparison with my older cards with a bigger 4K scene in PT with the 3.06 Test3 :
Titan : 11 min 55s (@1110 MHz core)
Titan Black : 10 min 36s (@1158 MHz core)
980ti : 7 min 16 (@1392MHz core) (~45% over titan black)
1080 : 6 min 39s (@2095 MHz core) (~10% over 980ti)

In this whole discussion, i don't see you guys bringing the 1070 into discussion. From the experience that i have with rendering on gpus at home and at my work, the 1070 = 980ti, but is a lot more energy efficient, more vram etc... I would opt for multiple 1070s all the way.

Yeah, maybe.. but right now one can get an EVGA 980Ti Hybrid refurb for $329 on NewEgg's eBay store, so that is like around a hundred bucks cheaper than a 1070 Hybrid. And FYI guys, more 980Ti Hybrids are popping up on eBay every day, and the prices are dropping even more. Many going for less than $350 now.
