I'm wondering if anyone might be able to give me a sense of the performance of the M1 chip, as I am in the process of purchasing a new laptop and would love to have a truly portable system without eGPU.
I've noticed render vendors seem to be reluctant to offer that info, and it's understandable. They don't want to piss off their partners. And they know it would unfairly portray M1.
M1 is an *exceptionally* promising platform but it's very new and the current GPU, while super for a sub-compact form, is not yet suitable for pro use. You'll be rewarded for patience.
Consider the current M1 offerings feature only 4 performance CPU cores (the other cores are only for efficiency) and 8 GPU cores. There will soon be systems with 2x, 3x 4x, 5x the core count. The future will be very bright for Apple Silicon, but for high end GPU performance especially...you need a higher end system with more cores.
Google M1x and you'll understand the jump that's coming...and why you better wait.
