Hair & Fur

Hi,
I understand that hair and fur in Octane is not compatible with Carrara's hair, but why not create a shader instead? In this shader, you could specify the length, density, thickness, etc.

I'll add it to the list.

A few ideas include:
A density map to guide the placement of hairs.
A color map to use to 'paint' the hairs.
A height map to use for hair length.
Not sure how to curve the hair though. You need something to control direction and something else to control the amount of curl. And it needs to be done without guide hairs.

This would be ok for short hair, stubble, short beards, military cut, and fur but you would need a proper hair guide system to do long hair.

I'm not saying I will do this soon as it is not as easy as it sounds. I'm not even sure I can do it. I am just saying I am open to the idea and I am looking for input on how this would work.

Hi,
Great to hear that :)
Your ideas are great, however, I would go for some maps AND for many sliders like those already integrated in Carrara. For example, if you want to create long curly hair, you add a Modifier (or Node) like "Bend and Twist" and another Modifier like "Wave." Now, we need for Bend and Twist the following sliders (see Carrara):
Twist Angle, Bend Angle, Bend Axis Angle, Limits, X, Y, Z
(nice to have -> Randomizer for Bend and Twist)

With these Modifiers (or Nodes), you can create hair and fur like a pro :)

It would be like in Maya, where you have 1000 sliders to create realistic hair. But we need only 10 of them to make it work :)

Would be great!

Thomas

Have you spoken to DAZ about them opening up the Carrara Hair SDK? I know it will be difficult whichever way it is done, but worth doing as the results will be spectacular!

Yes I conversed with them. They said they would consider it but don't hold your breath.

What about DCG's Anything Grows hair plugin, would hair generated in that be exportable to Octane..

Maybe worth a hookup with Eric to see if something could be worked out.

Just a Thought.
