We are delighted to share the unveiling of the “The Boy and His Robot”, allegedly the first live-action movie with visual effects that are entirely rendered by GPUs.
This film features 3D effects rendered with OctaneRender v1.20, in fact, OctaneRender was the only renderer used in production. This proves that Octane is fast enough allowing directors to make decisions about the final shot based on what they see in the viewport without relying too much on compositing. Although multi pass is still an upcoming feature in future versions of OctaneRender, a brilliant one render pass solution was hatched by the producers in order to work around Octane v1.20’s current limitation.
- “A lot of people mentioned the need for quick multi-pass rendering. However, in the compositing stage, I realized that with proper lighting during live production filming, and tweaking everything just by using the Octane viewport as reference, I can get a very close-to-final-image for immediate use in the compositing software. Thus skipping the need to tweak more in that stage.”

We are pleased to collaborate with Richmanclub Studios and their partners for this project and we are thrilled to see the very first movie with special effects rendered entirely with OctaneRender. As independent studios and film makers like Richmanclub Studios delve into GPU rendering, they can attest to the huge improvements in artist workflow and acknowledge the time and cost savings brought by the technology in the process of rendering visual effects. This movie signals the arrival of GPU-rendering in the Film and VFX industry and we hope it will be the catalyst for more studios to use OctaneRender in their pipeline and deploy GPU-rendering in more feature films.
- “Thanks for working on this gamechanging renderer called Octane. It is a dream come true for a movie maker, and it will only get faster and better from here I believe!”
