Help: export Revit to OBJ for Octane? IFC? Sketchup? Other?

Hi guys,
I am not a Revit user, but my client is.
I use Octane (Archicad plugin).

At first we tried to exchange a 3d model by IFC.
I can handle ifc, and the client is trying to expport to an ifc, but that does not work good enough.
The material are the same for different objects while they should not be (roof, wall, ...),
Secondly, the UV's are not correctly (one UV direction for differnet roof angles, some should be 90degrees rotated).
Or the client is not able to get a full export and the imported ifc shows just a few objects.
Is it possible to export from Revit to an IFC with correct UV or materials (with textures)?
If yes, can you explain in steps that I can tell my client.

So, as a solution I was thinking of using an OBJ.
Do you guys know of any good Revit exporter (plugin or add-on) to a correct materialised OBJ to use in Octane?

Greetz,

Hi There

Not a Archicad user but if you can import dwg into archicad, then export from revit a 3dmodel and pull it in to Archicad.

Hope it helps.

It depends which version of Revit your client is using. Revit 2014 and 2015 has better API support for obtaining UV's. Revit pre 204 will not export to obj with any UV's, or even using the FBX exporter will not give you materials. The Ingletree solution looks good. The other option would be to use OctaneReder for Revit, and export to OCS, which will give you an OBJ file with UV's.

hi Faceoff and Jaberwocky....!!
I tried your methods for export the revit scene to standalone...the addin obj exporter don't work in my system( i don't know why revit gives and loading dll error) some times octane for revit do the same... and I can't find the OCS exporter in demo 2015 2.0 version recently posted( I supposed this feature it's disabled in demo version). please correct me if I'm wrong...for the moment I use a DAE exporter from lumion and export from cinema4d to stand alone...

The OCS exporter is disabled in the demo version of the plugin. You will need to purchase the plugin (or use the Inglegreen exporter) in order to export correctly from Revit to Octane Standalone.

Hi again
Thanx guys for your advice and thoughts,

The last time the project was cancelled,
I now have a friend architect with Revit to try things.
I want to get it working for next time,
and I want to be able to direct or give tools to my Revit client
so he can export from Revit to Octane (Archicad plugin).

Thanx Jaba,
I will sure try this with my Revit partner and get back to tell if that worked.

Thanx, JNDesign,
I tried that before with previous client and I think it must be a good way.
I was able to open the dwg file in Archicad and in my Octane plugin I was able to add materials. It did not work correctly though, because different supposed to be materials were just one material that I could not split; i.e. Glass and wood of door was just one material object. My guess is that the client did not setup the model correct for export, but I cannot check. I can ask my new Revit friend to test this as well.

Hi Paul,
Using octane Render for Revit would be an option, but would the Revit user (my client) then not need to have a Octane standalone licence and the plugin?
They won't spend money just needing to export a file for me.
I would like buy an exporter Revit to Octane that I can let my client use under my licence, but such thing is not possible?
Or do you mean something else Paul?
The Inglegreen exporter seems the best solution for me.

Hi Perro,
I know a client can deliver the DAE, and I do have cinema4d.
So I could copy your workflow.
How do you export form C4D to stand alone?
Did you use exporter and just one click, or did you need to do adjustments and difficult settings? (I am C4D beginner, so it must not be to difficult)
(I will search on the forum for c4d exporter.)

I'll be back....
Cheers

Hi,
An alternative I came up with is Sketchup. I can handle SKP pretty good it the Archicad Octane plugin,
By using the Octane Exporter in Sketchup, and a pro is that I can adjust the model in Sketchup if needed.
Does anyone know about Revit export to Sketchup?
Cheers,

Hi there,

I've exported a complex Revit building(Educational facility) to DWG for use in Sketchup. worked OK. no funny interpretation of geometry, but not sure if the materials came across.

It was mainly an experiment/spatial study for the client/end users, so the data integrity requirements were low anyway.

Not sure if that helps; but start with export to DWG would be my tip!
also: I always use DWG version 2004 on export from Revit, it seems to be the most compatible: from memory 2007 is slightly smaller, but iirc it caused some errors in Autodesk impressions. its been a while...

I don't think that is possible Jeroen - to do this go with the Inglegreen solution.
