It's not a problem, it's just basic normal smoothing artifacts, i know it's an often reported/discussed problem but that's because we use the OBJ format and everyone implements it in his own way, and often people don't know about normal smoothing, smooth groups etc...

use blender for this its free 18mb and GREAT. Import as *.obj then Add modifier -> EdgeSplit 30 degrees or as you like...

So you're saying that with the right OBJ settings, these artifacts won't appear? Or that they can't be avoided at all with OBJ?

If you export with smoothgroups or with unwelded/split edges at a high angle they won't be there.
It's more a geometry issue than a file format issue.
