OcDS demo version ?

I got many problems with my previous octane attempts, so I leave it quickly for lux/reality.
Perhaps OcDS is the solution, perhaps it's useless (with my configuration, no doubt it's a great product! )

I can't spend a new wad of cash before I can make some test with real scenes, my hardware and compare with lux and his habilty to use slave renderer.

So... is there a demo version planned ?

In the announcements forum viewtopic.php?f=7&t=29824 states that the demo version will be available soon.

Yes, but in my opinion, the word "soon" has a special meaning in the forum of daz plugin :D

Seriously, when I say "planned" I read "is it a priority for t_3" or something we'll see a day (or another).
He could may be more concerned with adding features that work on a demo.

for me it is one top priority. give the price tag / compared to other daz addons, a demo is very important to spread this plugin. technically it is not a big thing to do, and apart from watermarks and fixed size rendering, there will be no notable differences between a demo and the real thing. and saving of course - it won't save its data (intentionally, i'd like to add ;))

a demo won't come though, until all of the initial problems are sorted out. i of course don't want to show off, that i'm able to crash studio on various occasions

means it will need a few weeks to settle. and i need to wait for an updated version of the octane demo sdk, since the existing one is no longer compatible with the current codebase. afaik this should happen with one of the upcoming octane updates.

i will use this topic to post news about a possible demo release, so you may want to subscribe to it, if not already done so.

btw, at the time when i switched from reality/lux to octane, i could replace 5 4.2ghz overclocked i7 2600K with one GTX 590. since slg and hybrid rendering is (afaik) still no major advantage, this may be about true also for now; only now you could get 2 titan's (cost about the same as 5 i7 render slaves), and get the same speed as with 10 i7 machines rendering with lux - in one machine... this in addition saves on your electricity bill. having a bunch of 300 watts pc's going 24/7 indeed costs notable amounts of money...

Thank you for your kind and detailled response.

We are not in the same league... My GTX 570 is only 1.2 Gb and I'm afraid it's a bit too short for pure GPU rendering. My rendering farm is just a middle sized workstation at work...
So, change the renderer will imply hardware change and equation is significantly different between hybrid/opencl (big CPU and memory bandwith) and CUDA (big GPU with lot of memory).
But you're right there are others concerns : "green IT" but also workflow, hardware reuse.

Last question about demo plugin: adding watermark and remove the save ability is not enough ?
The fixed size rendering could be set by the kind of octane licence (registred : unlimited, demo : limited).

personally i think having a "trial" version for ppl already using the standalone is a good idea - i'll forward that to otoy. on the other hand this means additional administrative effort; moreover, since crackers do already collect money (in public) to buy licenses in order to try to crack octane & the plugins, this might lead to other problems too.

in the end it's otoy's decision what is allowed or not...
