Hi,

This is a beta release of the OctaneRender™ 2020.1 for LightWave™ plugin version 2020.1.0.2, available for LightWave 11.6, 2015.3, 2018.0 and 2019.0/2019.1 Windows x64 and OSX. This build has been compiled using the Octane 2020.1 XB3 core.

To use Octane 2020.1, you need to have a Studio or Enterprise subscription license. We recommend you to update your NVIDIA driver to at least 435.80 for Windows or 435.12 for Linux.

As with all experimental builds, we advise to not to use this release for production purposes. We can't guarantee that scenes saved with this version will be compatible in future releases, and we anticipate there being several maintenance releases.

New features
To learn more about the new features and improvements of OctaneRender 2020.1, please check out the 2020.1 XB1 release post, but this is a quick list of the main new features that have been added. The features not listed here, like the new universal camera node, will be available in the upcoming builds.

  • New option to enable the RTX improvements.
  • Spectron Area and Sphere light types.
  • New Hosek-Wilkie Spectral Sky Model.
  • Improvements to Round Edges artist control.
  • SSS Improvements and Random Walk SSS.
  • Spectral Hair Material.
  • ACES: new workflow and Image Container File Layout
  • Volume Step % and Shadow Step %
  • Volume Sample Position Displacement
  • New Universal Dirt System

Release Notes
=============================================
RELEASE 2020.1.0.2
=============================================

* PLUGIN BUGS FIXED:

- Fixed a bug in the random walk sss node GUI "Lock Step Lengths" feature.
- Fixed a bug in the volume medium node while loading old scenes. The "Lock Step Lengths" option is now enabled by default, as expected.
- Addressed the support of LocalDB materials created as .orbx files without a nodegraph container.
- Fixed a bug in the round edges node load/save functions.
- Fixed a bug in the dirt node.

* OCTANE 2020.1 XB3 FEATURES AND BUGS FIXED:
- Added ability to hide specific objects from being evaluated by dirt.
- Memory optimizations when using the built-in denoiser.
- Minor performance improvements for hair and displacement geometry.
- Fixed 100% transparent object casting shadow on a SSS material.
- Fixed issue causing dirt to work just with the bottom level material when using composite materials.
- Fixed issue causing some scenes using autofocus with RTX to miss some geometry.
- Fixed GPU illegal memory access increasing shutter time from zero when using RTX.
- Fixed network rendering when the master runs on OSX and uses either Windows or Linux slaves.
- Fixed GPU invalid memory access when using auto-bumpmap with RTX geometry.
- Fixed issue causing geometry to disappear when using a baking camera after switching render targets.
- Fixed albedo for hair when the intersected primitive is not a hair primitiv.
- Fixed potential cause for artefacts in pixels which rays would be coplanar to quad primitives.
- Fixed issue in the way memory usage was tracked showing it continuously increasing.
- Fixed issue with auto bump map which was not working properly on the universal material layers.
- Fixed issue in auto bump map's plane size calculation which was causing wrong results.
- Fixed issue that was causing geometry to disappear when using a displacement texture with zero height.
- Fixed scenario in which auto bump would produce results hardly noticeable.
- Fixed crash when using some OSL shaders including some OSL geometry.
- Fixed issue causing full rebuilds after updating scatter nodes.
- Fixed incorrect light sampling when using a a mix of RTX primitives and other primitive types.

Happy rendering,
Your OTOY Team

Hello,

Installed this plugin, updated the NVIDIA driver to 441 again.
Loaded my big scene , which renders fine with Octane 2019 and 431 drivers.
At first it started to look fine, i did get a picture in the first second of the rendering. then halt, aborting and crash , Lightwave just crashed.
Rebooted the system, started LW and loaded the scene again. Started rendering, screen still black and crash, bye Lightwave.

Here is the log:

System setup: 2x 1080ti and 2x 2080ti

Rolling back the driver and Octane and I could render the scene again.
I really hope Otoy will be able to fix this annoying issue.

Thanks,
Hans

Yeah, driver HUNT (esp now with RTX specific) is a nightmare :(.

Can you try to export scene to ORBX (with rolled back driver) and then test in octane standalone, that way you can send scene to OTOY for crash replication on their side so we have more chances for a fix.

Did a new test, Octane 2020 AND 431 DOES render...but no RTX support....thats an improvement from last time...
Let me see if i can make an huge ORBX file from it...
---
Edit: Loaded the file into Octane Standalone, and it RENDERS without any issues. WITH 441 drivers.
While LW/Octane crashes.
So this is weird. Maybe Juanjo wants the LW files?

Yes, an orbx file to try to reproduce the problem from the Standalone can help a lot.

You should have received two wetransfer messages.
Octane Standalone does render it , LW just crashes as soon as it should start rendering.

One contains the ORBX, the other one the original LW stuff. Keep in mind there are some commercial items in it,
You'll also need ODTools to load a part of the instances, otherwise you'll need an old free version supplied with LWCad.

Let me know how it goes!

Thanks,
Hans

Thanks, I'll check these scenes. Standalone could render it because without LightWave the is more VRAM available in the display GPU ... LightWave can take a large amount of VRAM for the OpenGL viewports. Have you tried to render the scene from LightWave after disabling the GPU used for the monitors?

Thanks,

I think main problem there could be that Out Of Core option is behaving weird (lot of users reported it on various DCC apps) since 2019.x, it worked much better in octane 4.05.

Hi,

No positive result with only the non-displaycards active.
Keep in mind, with NVIDIA driver 431 LW/Octane 2020 DOES render, only when switching to the newest driver 441 and thus really enabling RTX it fails.
Only using the 1080ti's and disabling RTX also does not result in a succesfull render.
