Hi,

it is not the same, no. In the example above, it is using "object dissolve" which is not a shader controlled "effect". As Juanjo said, you could do that using OSL and there also might be a way using a LW procedural (using object distance and a gradiant ramp) backed/rasterized into a bitmap at rendertime.
