Hi all,

This is the fourth beta of 2023.1. A large number of changes were needed and so we would like to make this version a beta to address any last minute issues.

This version adds support for macOS 14 (Sonoma). macOS version 13.3 or newer is required, but newer versions are recommended.

Changes since 2023.1 Beta 3

Rendering
  • Added light beam extinction pin to post media node. This fixes the issue where larger scenes have very faint light beam effects before.
  • Fixed an issue in which the brightness of the denoised output appeared different when compared to the beauty pass.
  • Fixed artefacts occurring when using very small analytic disk lights.
  • Fixed brightness of analytic lights if light passes are used.
  • Fixed double sided analytic lights.
  • Fixed incorrect material masks if opacity is < 1 and the material is in front of a material that doesn't write a material mask.
  • Fixed missing analytic light spread angle effect in volumes and photon tracing.
  • Fixed render failure / hang when AI light + AI light updates is used in a scene with analytic lights.
  • Fixed render failure when photon tracing is used with analytic lights and light passes.
  • Fixed render layer AOV to take object visibility into account.
  • Fixed some contributions that are too bright if analytic lights are used.
  • Fixed some rendering discrepancies between macOS Metal and CUDA.
  • Fixed z-scaling issue with analytic light's spread angle at post.
  • Improved ray-tracing of clipping materials with very small ray epsilons.
  • Improved sampling for analytic disk lights.
  • Resolved a denoiser blending issue when chromatic aberration is enabled.

UI/UX
  • A relative film region size of 100% now sets the film region size in pixels to 65536 so you don't have to manually increase the film region after increasing the film size in versions older than 2023.1.
  • Added an indication in the node graph editor that a liveDB item is being loaded.
  • Added Switches under Utility in node graph editor menu.
  • Change default IOR pin value to 1.5 for relevant nodes.
  • Fixed crash in Octane when you try to load the LiveDB material "bricks v5".
  • Fixed issue causing RNDR uploads to be enabled at the wrong time, which would result in upload errors.
  • Fixed reading VDB nodes with a Volume to texture node when using _evaluateDelayed().
  • Fixed the login window sometimes getting lost on Ubuntu 23.04.
  • Made analytic light's normalization pin false by default.
  • Made default medium radius 100 in post volume node for default effect appearance.
  • Modified the device selection to only allow one 1 imaging device, which will automatically be enabled for rendering and also used as real-time device.
  • Undo the hue shift change to degrees as the input unit on a few nodes.
  • We now rename node graphs from liveDB after loading because many of them are just called "Material Macro". We change the name to the name stored with the liveDB category listing.
  • We now show device memory in gigabytes.
  • We now use texture emission for the emission node of analytic and directional lights for consistency.

Post FX
  • Fixed change in appearance of post fog if light beams are enabled or disabled.
  • Fixed brightness of post-fx light beams for disk and quad analytic lights which would vary with the primitive's area.
  • Fixed error happening when switching nodes while using texture previews and post-fx.
  • Less color sampling noise in post-fx light beams.
  • Less noise in directional light beams if fog is enabled.
  • Fixed post light beam noises on backface of the light.
  • Added fog extinction distance.
  • Added pin to allow setting the ground level where fog density is in full effect. Also added a second pin to define the y-coordinate where the fog density halves.
  • Made the number of post light beam sources 8.
  • Fixed missing exposure in the post volume kernel.
  • Fixed noise in postfx light beams if static noise is enabled.
  • Added falloff term to post light beams.

Lua API
  • Added new function: octane.nodegraph.getTimeTransform()
  • Added new constant: octane.animationTimeTransformType.LINEAR
  • Added new property table: octane.nodegraph.PROPS_TIMETRANSFORM_LINEAR
