Great release, but I have found a couple of issues.

Firstly, volumes are rendering very differently when compared to 2020.2.3 (see attached renders) no settings have been changed

Even if I remove volume gradients and emission, there's something not quite right...

Thanks

John

Hi,

Does this scene use the old volume behavior in 2020.2? You can check this in the kernel node.

We have done some work to make the rendered image more consistent between different ray march step length settings. As part of this the option of emulating the "old" volume behavior has been removed. In scenes where this option is enabled therefore the volumes settings have to be updated to this new behavior.

Hi, thanks for the response, I completely forgot about the 'emulate old behaviour' check box. Can you tell me what the difference is between the old and new behaviour ? is there some documentation on it so I can read about it ? and what version was the new behaviour introduced ?

Thanks

John

It is hard to tell exactly what changed. In general some behavior around edges, intersecting geometry, and overlapping volumes has changed. I've outlined some differences here: https://render.otoy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=77817.

BUG: RTX On renders this wrong (EDIT: on a 3090)

The last scene I was working on in 2020.2.3 looks completely wrong in 2021.1 XB1, and Im not really using any advanced features. I've started reducing the scene and have found at least 1 issue with RTX on, rendering incorrectly.

I just wasted a bunch of time trying to figure out why my IES lights were rendering different in 2021.

You didnt mention this in the release notes, but IES files now have an extra option if you click the spanner on the image node called "IES SCALING"

The scene looks exactly the same to me under 2021.1 xb1 rtx on and off, I have also compared it to 2020.2.3 rtx on and off, and don't see any difference.

What is your GPU and driver version?

Wallace, I'm currently using 466.47 game ready drivers on an RTX 3090

In 2020.2.3, it looks the same with RTX on or off. The problem only occurs in 2021.1 XB1.

So I guess I have to try some other drivers. What a pain. These ones fixed some issues with vray.

What drivers/card are you using?

EDIT: If I use my 1080 Ti instead, RTX on and off both look correct. So the problem only happens on the 3090

I'm using RTX 2080, so that it's a different compute model to yours, and I'm on an older driver 460.89.

Before you try different drivers, let me verify with a few more GPU/drivers.

Hi, was this with a new scene? When loading a scene saved using 2020.2 it should be set to normalize the maximum to 1.0.
