Ok I see what I did wrong - had the render type on Global - needs to be on one of the other settings naturally.
However, I'm getting very strange behavior.
The infinite plane comes in at around a 45° angle. Changing the object's rotation to x 90° and z90° puts the plane oriented correctly but leaves some very weird geometric patterns showing on the surface (see screen shot).
I needed to change the Y rotation by .1° to get everything smoothed out.
Is this all intended behavior? Shouldn't the infinite plane be oriented along the X axis so it lies flat on the ground plane by default?
Additionally I'm getting some very bad performance on some files in viewport rendering with an infinite place active - even though I have a separate GPU dedicated to just the viewport.
