This is not our notation for sequences "smoke_$F.vdb". Just keep it as "smoke_000.vdb" and plugin will detect numeric part of filename. You got it in your second example.

oK finally figured it out. No $F in the file path, just pick any random file in the sequence, set digits to 4 and put in your start and end numbers.

Works.

I've also got it working while still using the $F. My file path was "testsmoke.$F.vdb" instead of "testsmoke_$F4.vdb" which wasn't working and I set the Houdini project to have a start frame of 0 instead of its default of 1. Those two things got it working for me.
