Rhino and octrane

Hi,

I´m trying octane for a couple of hours now and I´m still impressed.

Even though I watched the video tutorials for the demo version and read through the manual, I couldn´t find an answer to some questions.

I use Rhino 4 and 5 and I´m aware that so far there is no plugin for Rhino (please add one!!!), so I have to export obj-files.

So I loose the material settings and applied textures and decals. To create adequate materials in octane seems fairly easy. But I see no way to apply maps to objects f.e. to have a logo on a certain part of a surface.

Is there a chance to do so?

Thanks

There is a basic, early development version available to license holders. Materials, textures, and texture maps should come through with the obj exporter, decals will not. If you have a 3dm, obj, and mtl which illustrates the problems you are having we can take a look.

This could be an issue with your export settings, in our manual there's a section on how to configure OBJ export settings correctly (it has a rhino screenshot too if i remember correctly):

Thanks for your answers.

I tried again to find a solution for my problem but couldn´t.

I can´t send the original data but I created a simple scene with a cube and a plane. The textures you see on the image is applied in octane. As you can easily see it is mirrored. Any ideas why? Sometimes it is upside down and I have no idea why.

Furthermore I´d like to have the "f" as a small logo somewhere on the cube but how?

Regards

Are you applying your texture mapping in Rhino? Does it appear correct in the Rhino viewport?

I know there is a bug in the exporter in that it currently does not remove special characters and spaces, which can sometimes trip up Octane. Try renaming both your materials and your texture maps to remove spaces and special (non ASCII), then see how the export goes.

As for the decal, I don't know of a way, I think you would have to make it a part of your texture map.

Hi SamPage,

good hint, thanks. I had to flip the U-direction and it worked. But that´s kind of difficult, esp. with larger scenes. I´d have to apply maps to all surfaces in Rhino, flip directions and after exporting apply the maps in octane again. Is there no switch in octane to do so?

As for the decals, there must be some way to apply them. The attached picture from the octane manual has decals, doesn´t it? A problem with rhino?

One more question - octane freezes as soon as a scene is completely rendered. I have to use the task manager then and finish octane and start it again. Is that a known bug?

Best regards

Does the mapping in Rhino not match what you are seeing in Octane, or is it mirrored in Rhino as well? If the Rhino mapping is not matching the Octane mapping, I would like to have a sample to see what is going on. I take it this is with objects that are just surfaced mapped (no explicit mapping applied). If you apply a planar or box map, or anything similar, do you still have the same issue?

I am not seeing the hang on render completion. Is this only for files coming from the Rhino exporter, or can you get this on any imported obj?

Thanks,
Sam

Well, the whole thing is weird. Sometimes textures completely disappear, sometimes they are mirrored or flipped.

I just can´t find any rule at all. I keep the export and import settings, I check the normals but it seems to be completely accidental.

Can you give the the 3dm of this scene with the textures please? And just to be on the same page, are you using Rhino v5 64 bit, the 1.022r01.02a version of the Rhino exporter, and Octane pre-Beta 2.3 v5?

Thanks,
Sam

BTW, if you're using R4, do you have the advanced obj exporter.

It has a few features which may come in handy for your situation
