+1 here,
I cannot use Arion cos it does not support my card yet with sun-sky enviroment, and cannot implement octane yet cause lack of emmiters...

would be good to see a comparison between arion and octane then if you have both when octane 1 is official!

I wanted to add a comment/question about mesh emitters vs spots.

I work to visualize theatrical and private concert events that rely heavily on theatrical spot lights, gobos (metal inserts for spot lights that cast shadows), area lights, etc. I've used Mental Ray so far and wanted to add my request that such features perhaps be considered down the road. I'm sure I'm in a minority here, but such options are key to my work. Obviously I have other non theatrical projects and I've purchased a Octane license because I'm excited by the quality/price and potential for the renderer.

Just my two cents!

ttaberna: Does Arion support animation render? As far as I know it doesnt, at least it is not on the features I read on their website.

I have a question/feature request for Radiance on this subject. Will it be possible to have a mesh that emits light, but is completely transparent in the scene? This would be useful for compositing the source of the light in the scene for visual effects animation. For example, composite stock footage of an explosion or gun flare into a scene and the emitting mesh creates the light in the environment for the pyrotechnic, but the mesh isn't visible and getting in the way of the composite. I wasn't sure if this was planned, since it seems like it might be breaking the rules of Octane being an unbiased renderer, but would be very useful.

While I'm asking questions :D , will it be possible to animate the color or intensity of the mesh's light?

Hi,

Light will just be an emission channel on all materials, so you can make them 'glow' and we'll provide some additional spectrum nodes for blackbody etc...

I understand that the 2.3 beta is comming within a few weeks but is there a slightest chance that you'll release a mega buggy pre 2.3 beta release with the mesh emitting?
You could call it 2.3RC0 :)
Coz doing all the lights with hdri image data is a pain in the toosh...

we haven't even had a change to start work on 2.3 due to the one week sale, we've been swamped with customer ordering.
we'll resume work on monday.
should be 2-3 weeks off.

Well Im one of you half price client and I must say that Im 100% satisfied :) Its the first renderer out there that working with is really fun, I mean the speed just gives it the flexability that I as a non 3D person need to experiment and progress.
For the time being could you please give or point to some info on how to minimize the fireflies effect using pathtracing and hdri images to light?
