Hi refracty, what did you do to fix the problem with the normals?
I am also having this problem frecuently when rendering with octane, when I render with max everything works fine...
also why is this happening in very simple geometry?
What do the normals should look like?
Thank you

Is the solution private as well? Or every new user that has this problem should open a new thread...

I already talked about the solution already. It is about rebuilding the normals.
Nothing special.

I simple performed "set Normals to face" in Maya and smoothed them out afterwards (smooth normals).
Thats it.

thanks...

For 3ds max users, use the 'Unify' command in the 'Edit Normals' modifier. All it does is align the vertex normals, so instead of two or more lines shooting out of a vertex you should see one, if it's meant to look smooth. But you shouldn't be exporting normals anyways (it exports twice as fast) and instead assing smoothing groups properly.

this problem is very annoying by the way......
somebody knows how to fix this?

i have attached the images, i cant believe this is happening with this very simple geometry... :(
and also i have attached an image of the exact same object renderd with mental ray, its perfect.

edit:

Ok, as I mentioned earlier, you shouldn't need to check normals in the export dialog. In fact, forget about the Normals modifier. You should making proper use of smoothing groups, AND (this is the important part), omit normals in the export dialog. This is what I use:

This operation seems to omit normals in the export operation, and Octane rebuilds normals based on smoothing groups. (It also takes half the time to export this way)

And, BEFORE importing, get into Octane preferences and check this:

This last step may not be necessary, but I check it either way :P

Hi Proupin thank you for the info.
i tried unchecking the normals option in the OBJ exporter and the problem is solved in the octane standalone... :) everything renders smooth and nice.

but i canot solve the problem working with the octane plugin in 3DS Max..... do you know a solution for this?

also i cannot see a image you attached, it says something about image shack domain.... whta is it

thank you very much for your time.
