OTOY® is proud to announce the availability of the new DCC plugin OctaneRender 2023.1.2.0 Solaris 19.5.805 - RC6 and Solaris 20.0.590 .

The world's fastest unbiased GPU rendering engine on CUDA and Metal now integrates completely with Houdini 19.5 & Houdini 20.0 Solaris.

What is OctaneRender for Solaris?
The OctaneRender for Solari's plugin is based on Pixar’s USD (Universal Scene Description) and Pixar’s Hydra API to empower artist workflows across look development, scene layout, lighting, and final rendering.

-Installation steps-

Insert the OctaneRender® plugin folder path to the houdini.env file. Houdini®creates this file after launching it for the first time.
On Linux and macOS® systems, append a single line to enable OctaneRender®:

HOUDINI_PATH = "/path/to/octane;&"

On Windows® systems, you need to set the PATH to point to the plugin bin folder as well:

PATH = "C:/path/to/octane/bin;$PATH"

Setting this environment variable outputs any error related to loading the OctaneRender® plugin on the command line for diagnosing installation problems:
HOUDINI_DSO_ERROR = 2

-Houdnin Packages/json installation steps-

- Please create a folder inside Documents\houdini19.5 and name it as Packages
- Open notepad or any text editor and use these lines
Code: Select all
{
    "enable" : true,
    "env":
    [
        {
        "OCTANE_AUTOSPAREPARAMS" :
        {
            "value": 1,
        },
            //location to your octane folder (example below)
            "OCTVERSION": "PATH\TO\OCTANESOLARIS\Win64FOLDER",
        },

        {
            "HOUDINI_PATH" :
            {
                "value": "$OCTVERSION",
            },

            "PATH" :
            {
                "value": "$OCTVERSION/bin",
            },
            "PXR_PLUGINPATH_NAME" :
            {
                //if you have the Solaris version installed
                "value": "$PATH\TO\OCTANESOLARIS\dso\usd_plugins",
            },
        }
    ]
}

- Then Save as OctaneSolaris.json
- Please make sure to disable the .env paths

  • - Implemented Color space for HDRI environment
  • - Fixed hair color vertex
  • - Renamed Material Builder
  • - Performance optimization

-Known Issues-
- Solaris rendering extra beauty AOV with Octane node and currently investigating
- Light Linker is yet to be supported as we are investigating if we could assign the Octane light IDs internally.
However, the usual Octane light linking works as expected.
- Deep AOV is yet to support!

Important: if using macOS, we strongly recommend that you update to version 13.3..

Linux Note
On Linux only compatibility Houdini 20 build is supported (gcc9.3).
It can only be installed by downloading it from the downloads page since it's not visible in the Launcher:
https://www.sidefx.com/download/daily-b ... ction=true
or direct download link: houdini-20.0.590-linux_x86_64_gcc9.3.tar.gz
We are looking into supporting the gcc11.2 build.

Thanks so much for the update. I can see that the color vertex is working just as it should, which is awesome! There's just one little thing that I've noticed while I've been playing around with Octane in Solaris. It's to do with rendering hair - more specifically, the UV.

I've popped a sample file in here for you to take a look at. When I'm over in the SOP context, the UV transfers to the hair like a dream, and I can use a texture to decide on the hair color along with Cd. But when I switch over to Solaris, I can't seem to find a way to do the same thing.

I've tried using "st" instead of UV and I've even given different projection nodes a whirl. But so far, no luck. Would you mind taking a look for me?

Hello, I cant get materials working properly? What am I missing?
I can get the basic setup rendering with octane so it feels like I installed it correctly.

Is the Solaris Material Builder supposed to be empty without a shader?

I installed the new version and linked to it in my octane.json file placed in packages.
Im on Houdini version 20.0.506

Installed the new Houdini version 20.0.590 and can confirm that fixed the material builder. So my bad for using an outdated version! All good now.

Question!
Why solaris IPR lags when there is HDRI map in Octane? Seems to be fast and smooth with the octane sky only, but when adding HDRI it lags a lot, sometimes it looks like it downscales the image and then scales it back. Not really snappy I'd say to use

hi lavrenovlad

Thank you so much for reporting this.
We can replicate the IPR lags on our side.
We have requested our dev to improve the performance when using the HDRI.

Cheers
