We are excited to bring you the first beta version of the OctaneBlender addon!

This version works on the "vanilla" Blender you can download and install from the Blender Foundation website ( https://www.blender.org/ ).

This means there's no need for a custom build anymore!

Running the Octane server is still needed.

We will continue developing/updating both the addon and non-addon versions, until the addon version can be declared stable.

How to Install

  • Download the addon and the server files
  • Unzip the Octane Addon Server in any location on your hardrive
  • Launch the Octane Addon Server (OctaneServer.exe)
  • Launch Blender and from Preferences/Addon, install the Octane for Blender addon
  • Select File/New/Octane Default Startup
  • Quit Blender
  • Launch Blender again

Now you can use Octane on the most current official Blender version!

Scenes created with the current non-addon version may need to be converted to the addon version.

To do that, with the scene, you need to convert loaded in the non addon version, please use File/Export/OctaneBlender Addon.

This will generate a new scene with the "addon" string added to the file name.

As with all beta builds, we advise to not use this release for production purposes.
We are trying to, but we can't guarantee that scenes saved with this version will be compatible in future releases, so, again, do not use this beta for production work.

Features

Generally, We have migrated most of the features from the non-addon version to this addon version.

  • Update version number to 28.10
  • Update to Octane 2023.1.2
  • Support copying socket values when changing node type
  • Support automatic turning on/off viewport rendering when starting final render
  • Implement movable sockets in the Mask With Layer Group nodes
  • Update the material converter to adapt to Blender 4.0
  • Complete the missing NT_OUTPUT_AOV_LAYER_BLEND_IMAGE image


Performance Optimization

  • Support batch mode(optimize the node upload performance)
  • Only upload the geometry group one time, and at the end of every update session
  • We will continue optimizing the addon performance in the future versions


GUI Improvement

  • Do not use factor as subtype for properties which use log mode slider
  • Update imager/postprocess UI and "gray-out" feature, for better indication of which imager/postprocess is currently active
  • Move "Octane Output" to the root level of the Output property panel
  • Add "Octane Output Path" and "Reuse Blender's Output Path". Now users can specify an independent output path for Octane
  • Move OCIO configurations into Color Management
  • Adjust the GUI of imager and color management
  • Only show the displacement in the Shader node tree
  • Add "Open Octane DB" in the "Top bar-window" menu
  • Adjust the "Add Light" menu - put Octane lights on top
  • Adjust the hint text of the "Scatter" object type


Bug Fixes

  • Reset viewport to "SOLID" when the active workspace is changed.
  • Fix the acesToneMapping update issue
  • Fix curve node initialization problem
  • Fix the missing node menu problem when using Cycles
  • Fix the problem that changing "active" world output does not update the viewport rendering
  • Fix orthographic camera shift issue
  • Fix motion blur bugs
  • Fix long time window-freezing when closing denoised final render
  • Fix long time window-freezing when server is not found or activated
  • Fix a material update issue when cutting links to the root node
  • Fix an update problem when changing a preset
  • Complete missing light pass data in object layer
  • Fix the object layer bug when using analytic lights
  • Fix the offset bug when using "rv3d.view_camera_offset"


Usage

  • Start with a default scene ( File/New/Octane Default Startup)
  • Convert a scene from the non-addon version: "File-Export-OctaneBlender Addon". This can be available in the coming non-addon 27.16 version. Please report any problem you may find when converting your scenes!

Known Issues

  • Border camera mode is not available yet.
  • At the moment, the classic property panel for kernels and passes is not available. Please use the new Kernel Node Tree and Render AOV Node Tree instead.

As this is a Beta release, you may find issues. Please report any bugs and/or missing features, possibly providing the scene and steps to reproduce the problem.

Some converted scenes may not work properly - please report any of them.

If you are unable to share the scenes, please try running Blender in debug mode and send us the logs.

How to run Blender in Debug mode

  • Open the directory of the Blender executable file.
  • Double-click the blender_debug_log.cmd file to open it.
  • This will launch Blender in debug mode and automatically start capturing logs.
  • Reproduce the issue you are experiencing in Blender.
  • Once you have finished reproducing the issue, close Blender.
  • Blender will open a folder containing error log files.
  • You can then send us the blender_debug_log.txt file to help us diagnose the issue.
