OctaneRender 2024.1 Alpha 3 for Houdini production (2024.1.Alpha_3.0)

This is a production release of the OctaneRender™ 2024.1.Alpha_3.0 for Houdini™ plugin compiled with the Octane 2024.1 Alpha 3 core. This 2024.1.Alpha_3.0 release is available for the latest Houdini production builds on Windows x64, Linux, and macOS arm64.

Houdini production builds supported by this release: 19.0.720, 19.5.805, 20.0.506, 20.0.547, 20.0.590, 20.0.625.

If you are not sure if your Houdini version is compatible with the plugin - just run it and you will see an error message in case of incompatibility.

Linux Note
On Linux, this OctaneRender Houdini plugin release starts to support cxx11 ABI (gcc 11.2) Houdini 20 builds (the default Houdini 20 builds). For a start, this release provides H20.0.590 and H20.625 Cxx11 ABI plugin builds, and this release still provides all gcc 9.3 builds for Houdini 20.

You can install Houdini 20 gcc9.3 builds by the latest Houdini Launcher or download and install them from the downloads page:
https://www.sidefx.com/download/daily-b ... ction=true
or direct download link: houdini-20.0.625-linux_x86_64_gcc9.3.tar.gz

We would like to remove the gcc 9.3 builds eventually, so please give the new gcc 11.2 builds a go and report any problems you run into.

New features
To learn more about the new features and improvements of OctaneRender 2024.1 Alpha 3, please check out the 2024.1 Alpha 3 release post

Known bugs
On Linux, MPlay IPR may not be working. If you are having problems with it, please switch to QT5 IPR and disable "Render to MPlay" in ROP nodes.

Hi, this may be specific to your system config somehow. I assume you have tried updating your drivers etc?
We can't reproduce and so far nobody else has reported something similar. (doesn't mean there isn't an issue, just tough to track down)

I will ask some other users to check and test for me too, will let you know.

One thing I do need you to try is if you are using NVLink/SLI, try change the Device Image option to the other GPU and please let me know if that helps.

Hey Ricky,

Config: latest Win10, amd 7950x, 192gb ddr5 ram, and 2x 4090s (no sli nor vlink). Nvidia drivers are the latest studio ones and houdini 20.0.625. It crashes in any project so far, intel denoiser seems to be a little more stable, ai one is just really bad. It previously even crashed the whole system to BSOD screen which is crazy.

Hi,

there is a bug with analytic lights - the diffuse parameter isn't working. So these analytic lights always bounce light, even if the diffuse value is set to black.

And I wanted to ask, if there's any news on the hair shader problem, I reported a few month ago?

Cheers

Hi there, I don't think that parameter should exist on the Analytical light. It does not exist on that light in Standalone, can you give me an example of what you are trying to do? Can you not use General Visibility or a Ray Switch?

Yes, there is a fix that went into Standalone for it last week or so if I recall correctly. I can't give you an eta of when that fix will make its way to Houdini just yet though.

Have you tried switching the device image to the other card anyway? Causing a BSOD is indeed unusual, it is not necessarily directly due to the denoiser itself. I will keep an eye out for more users having an issue like that but so far there aren't any of those reports in Houdini.

By the way do you get those crashes in the 2024.1 Alpha 3 Standalone too?

Hi Ricky,
thanks for the quick response.

So here I have two analytic lights:
Image
If I set the intensity to zero on the left one, it still renders as diffuse material - and also bounces the other light onto the scene.
Image

The bounce still happens, when the light has general visibility turned off.
The problem is, if I use low intensity lights, the brightness of that bounce can be brighter than the light value I want to set it to.
Here for example, I set the left light to a saturated red but that white bounce makes it look completely different than intended:

Here I do the same with a standard quad light:

Here's the scene, if it is of any help:

Thanks for the report, I am currently looking into this. It seems this may be a core issue as I don't think it is intended to bounce light from other sources.

Oh, and one more thing. When I duplicate a SpectronLight I get this error:
"15774, in copyItems

hou.OperationFailed: The attempted operation failed.
