Im getting zdepth wrong - not just white

I am hoping to render out a working 32 bit zdepth pass. I am using aces 1.2 and usually I leave tonemapping off to keep the 32 bit data as raw for comping later.

Attached image is in fusion, though I see the exact same thing in the octane ipr. This is weirdly not depth info, it looks more like fresnel or normal info. The sharper shape on screen left is not present in the geo or a shadow so i'm a bit confused as to what is going on.

Changing the zdepth max seeems to only change the gain on the whole image and doesn't look like the depth gradient is shifting.

What am I doing wrong?

Sorry, I can't see anything in your scene. Can you send me an example scene as simple as possible including frozen data only? Anyway, the AOVs configuration seems right, so I'm not sure what could be the problem.

Thanks,
