Re: Very bad first Try. Please criticise.
Please consider some real photo reference, study the lighting, and shot composition. Improve absolutely everything, the textures, the materials, the models... Octane can't help you at the moment

Re: Realistic House Interior
I really liked your images, some materials could pop a little more, and the carpet doesn't feel fluffy... but the model, lighting and the cameras are great... good job!

Re: opensubdiv
A OpenSubdiv implementation already exists: http://www.mariussilaghi.com/products/turbosmooth-pro
It lacks the viewport limitation as well. Right now it's a modelling aid, and it has a really nice 'linear UVs' option so they don't distort like they do with Turbosmooth etc.

Giger died?!
I went to Gruyere just to see his crazy museum, one of the best ones I've even been to. Oh well RIP.

Re: OctaneRender® for 3ds max® v1.50a
This is common with overblown exposure, those pixels (and more importantly, the subpixels) have higher values than (1,1,1). Vray for instance has an option to clamp the output, that along sub-pixel mapping, will anti-alias correctly, but you lose all information beyond (1,1,1), which really sucks ...
