Leave windows/openings empty ... no efficient glass rendering currently, no portals, etc.

Crank up the exposure to capture what little light gets in there. ;)

I believe that's just the shading which results from your lighting setup. Lit from below, you get shadows above ... moving your main light source would help, or you could add another (dimmer) lamp higher up to fill in the darker areas.

I suppose pathtracing was easier/faster to code and get the app running. MLT is on it's way ... it's taken some time and will improve the renderered output.

Using the same basic setup (Blender 2.49b, Octane 0.8a '9000.exe', XP-64) I exported 4 cubes and a plane with different materials (the file is attached if you want to try it) ... all seemed to work fine.
