Re: What is wrong with the hybrid cpu/gpu approach

A hybrid approach is slower than pure GPU, since the two platforms must communicate = a lot of data copying back and forth from system to GPU. AFAIK, loading data on the GPU for CUDA usage is costly, and it's only worth when you do a lot of calculations on that data. So a hybrid approach is also ...

What is wrong with the hybrid cpu/gpu approach

Hello All,

I was talking to the developers of another render engine at a user group recently, and they mentioned that in the next version they will be adding gpu acceleration. I won't mention which one, as they said it was still a bit hush hush and on checking the website they still haven't ...

Re: mesh, texture file sizes, & memory worries?

thanks for reply pixelrush

weirdly you guessed exactly correctly, I've currently got a 512mb 9800GT, and I've just ordered a 2gb gtx460, which will go into my 64bit ubuntu box, with i7 and 6gb Ram, in exactly the config you mentioned  . But the 9800gt has let me play with octane, enough to ...

mesh, texture file sizes, & memory worries?

Hello,

This is my first post here. I couldn't find the answer to my question elsewhere in the forum, so sorry if it's already been covered.

Before I take the plunge and buy octane, I'm a bit confused by the available memory on the video card. I've played with a few scenes and they always seem to ...
