I think you need to at least understand the basic physics behind these phenomena before trying to tackle these effects.

Amazing renders, but in the last one I couldn't tell that the darker toned wall was actually on the same angle, so it really confused me that the painting didn't appear to be sitting on the wall properly. I had to check the first render to realise it was actually the same wall. Bit of a weird ...

Looks really nice. The main issue I felt was present in the first render was that the front grenade didn't 'feel' like it was actually sitting on the ground with the lack of a contact shadow, but you've nicely addressed that in your second render. Good job.

It takes a lot of calculations for rays to pass through a whole heap of invisible geometry. It's much better to modify your leaf geometry (which I'm assuming is one quad), cut it a few times and modify the shape to as closely resemble the texture as possible.
