All i did in the end was add a render target node after looking at example files. That seems to activate the preview window into working. Was nothing to do with drivers etc. Hope that helps you.

Ive just started to look at more depth at the Standalone octane app. Ive been using octane now for just under a year but with C4D and recently updated plugin to 456.71 (studio driver) as when i updated the pluin for C4D the preview under old driver wouldn't work, It now does with new driver ...
