Craig Donner has made alot of technical advances in the realm of Subsurface Scattering phenomena. What I think strikes me most is the lack of underlying muscular or bone structure. Have a look at this paper he wrote, which has some handy images you could use as reference:

general questions for the future
Hey Octane, great Job on the new release ! Looks promising as always!
I'm just checking in again.
I have some long-term questions, I suppose not even as much about Octane, as about GPU rendering.
How does the GPU rendering community hope to overcome memory limitations? To my knowledge (which ...

Re: Shadeless materials
that kind of feature is something I imagine Octane isn't designed to do. However, its an easy feat. All your looking for is a Surface Shader (in maya). I imagine your using it to generate a matte of some kind for compositing.

Re: bedrom vray vs octane quick setup
Vray does have it's share of learning curve. But well, if this was a realistic situation, my guess is, you'd be expected to know Vray a tad better.

Production Rendering
Hello Octane users and developers !
I've been quietly following Octane renderer for some time now. The moment the first Alpha came out I was using it at home and delighted by the results. I have used Arion as well. It is my personal belief that the Refractive developers have created a better ...

Love Unbaised GPU, but a little concerned for Octane
I'm a bit nervous posting here. traditionally, unfavorable comments on internet forums lead no where.
I'm really excited for Octane. I grabbed the alpha for Windows the day of its release. I entered the competition; I submitted the stills of the MTV logo with liquid and the "scad film festival" in ...

Re: What next ? FBX or Collada
FBX is an incredibly robust format that is used both professionally and in education to transport animation between 3d apps. I know alot of people on the forum are blender guys and thus open source is a biggie. I love the idea behind Collada. But for me, and my work, and the work of my colleges, FBX ...

Re: January: Octane License Competition
Hey guys !
Been playing around with Octane since last night. I'm going to submit some images. I really like the idea of taking 3d Photography with this. Even the speckles i think add a more film like response to the images.
here is what I've come up with.
