Thanks for all of your replies. I investigated a little, and I could not seem to find any Threadripper boards on the market with more than 6 PCI-E slots, which would mean using a bunch of PCI-E splitters if I wanted to reach the originally desired number of cards.

Hey aoktar, just to keep you updated on what we ended up doing ; we converted all of our RGB textures to BC1 compression in .dds format outside of Octane. We are getting almost all of the VRAM savings that we had using compression inside Octane, but it is very stable and we have had no crashes.

Ah, sorry about that, I started work on another scene which also crashed, so the bugreport has most likely been overwritten, although the crash happened in almost exactly the same circumstances as the previous one :

It is happening only in this specific scene, and only since I started using VRAM texture compression. I tried working with disabled node previews, but the plugin just crashed again - gracefully this time.

Unfortunately I switched to V4.05-R2 and the file keeps crashing the plugin very frequently - frequently enough that as-is, it is impossible to work on. While before it was still handling crashes gracefully, now C4D freezes when changing the material ...
