How can I render a top view of, for example, a mountain in order to get a high quality greyscale depth map / height map?

Hi there.
I merged alot of cubes to one poly object. Then I throw one texture to the object. My issue here is that now every cube has the exact same texture behaviour (In my case I used a wood texture).
