Currently you have to use a Opacity map for this. .PNG alpha support is on the horizon.

You have me curious, what are you using to employ PTEX? when i read about it, it was just a library that you could develope on, not an actual program. I'd love to fiddle with it myself.

You could try exporting it to a .OBJ file and then recalculate the normals in Blender.
CTRL+N recalulates normals to face outside.

I had the same issue. Had to install the DEV version of 197.13 to get it to come around. Rendering now and looks awesome!
