The many core issues holding Octane back

As time progresses and plugin development marches on it becomes clearer that there are serious fundamental issues with Octane’s core and underlying data structures.

This appears to result in major limitations that seriously impact Octane’s use in a professional setting, and put it at major feature ...

Re: OctaneRender® 2025.1 Beta 1 [current 2025.1]

It’s actually completely misleading. They call it support for ‘rest attribute’ but it’s not even using rest attribute.

It’s just pinning a texture to a deforming mesh, and it doesnt even work with triplanar and bump/disp.

Re: OctaneRender® 2025.1 Beta 1 [current 2025.1]

This isn't actually supporting rest attributes at all, it's just specifying a reference frame.

It should actually use rest attributes; this should work on meshes with changing point counts. This is how every other engine does it. That's why rest attribute is important, so you can use procedural ...

Re: OctaneRender® 2024.1 Beta 1 [current 2024.1]

I don’t think anyone would claim software development, especially for a render engine is easy or predictable.

The problem is these ridiculous GTC presentations saying X feature is coming this year, for multiple years in a row that never make it in.

Instead we get a bunch of stuff no one really ...

Re: OctaneRender® 2024.1 Beta 1 [current 2024.1]

Is this feature locked? We’re halfway through the year and still none of the features that were supposed to come in 2023 aren’t even in 2024?

Why is it that every year there is a flashy GTC presentation which promises features and every year without fail none of them make it into a release? Still ...

Re: Deformation MoBlur Doesn't Want to Work

Deformation blur doesn't work with texture displacement yet, only vertex displacement.

Re: OctaneRender® 2024.1 Alpha 1 [current 2024.1]

This 2024.1 alpha is identical to what was stated would be part of 2023.2. What happens to 2023 going forward? Does this mean the geometry updates won't come to 2023?

Also... what happened to all these features you listed as coming in future versions of 2023? Are they coming as part of v2023, are ...

Re: Lines with small bumps

You're projecting the texture using a cubic projection on the texture tag, that is so so small (0.05cm) that what you're seeing is the renderer trying to filter those tiny tiny tiny bumps. Fit your projection to the object and then adjust the scale of the noise with a transform node to get where you ...

Re: Packed RBD motion blur clarification

Thanks for investigating; I'll send you a scene in the next day or so.

One thing to note - packed RBD motion blur in Redshift works without using deformation blur. It works using only "transformation" blur which is the same technique used for OBJ level transforms. I bet if you tried the same test ...

Re: Packed RBD motion blur clarification

Can you please share an example scene with your workflow? I'm not sure to understand what the problem could be. The packed geo is expanded to regular geometry and the motion blur is computed from the mesh deformations.

Thanks,
-Juanjo
Hi Juanjo - what you describe here is the problem . Packed ...
