Yeah I think my situation might be a little unique. Apparently it's the specific combo of an Asus X99E-10G WS motherboard and triple or quad NVIDIA GPU configurations. I had to roll back to 382.53 to prevent blue screens.

Ah, I was worried I may need to update my graphics drivers. I was kind of hoping it was something else. I had to roll back my drivers to a previous version to prevent numerous Blue screens every day. I've noticed this same thing and always just thought it was a limitation of Octane. It only updates your viewport background if you actually close out of your Octane viewport and relaunch it. It will then load whatever background image is set for the frame you're on when it opens.

Haha yeah, Nuke is great.

However, I didn't have a problem just using a noise map as a track matte for the dude disappearing into the smoke.
