Re: How to use the lighting passes
For the record, I "solved" this issue by saving the Sunlight pass as an 8-bit copy and putting it through a third-party utility called "Defly" (http://www.visnevskis.com/index.php?id=95&L=1) to remove the fireflies, after which the image could be used for compositing. This isn't a permanent solution ...

Re: How to use the lighting passes
Will try to adjust caustic blur, thanks Thomas!
Removing the glass did indeed reduce the fireflies, but as you said the lighting changes a bit.

Re: How to use the lighting passes
Thanks for your reply bepeg4d!
The scene is lit with the Daylight environment, no custom HDRI is present. As mentioned, the fireflies are only apparent in the Sunlight pass, the main render looks absolutely fine. Clay rendering doesn't look much different since there is glass on the exterior ...

Re: How to use the lighting passes
Very clear explanation! I was wondering how it works together with the diffuse direct/indirect and reflection direct/indirect passes, but I get now that those are just an alternative way of compositing (since the light passes contain both diffuse and reflection in themselves). In some cases it would ...

I understand your points linvanchene and itsallgoode9.
I don't think it has been the intention of Otoy to provide a full-fledged "engine" in which you can manipulate scenes. As of right now Octane standalone is more akin to a rendering package such as Luxrender, Indigo renderer or the stand-alone ...

Re: Possible Lua Script for determining coordinates
At least for MODO there's a user-made script called "Modo to Octane scatter" that takes the transform coordinates of your selection (inside Modo) and generates a .txt file with the coordinates that can then be directly input into a Scatter node inside Octane. This is a very handy tool since you can ...

Re: A solution for procedural cloud volumes
What an ingenious technique! I tried this workflow and it produces really nice-looking clouds, although they're quite heavy to render. :)
pegot: You don't need to (and in fact CAN'T) use scattering, since the clouds are made up of 1-sided planes which don't have any volume in themselves. My ...

Re: placement of OBJ
I disagree strongly on that point.
From my point of view working with computer graphics has several stages
- A) modeling
- B) creating a scene
- C) rendering
You seem to group together A & B.
I on the other am often faced with a different kind of workflow:
Example:
A) Zbrush is 3D modeling ...

Re: placement of OBJ
Octane is a rendering package, it's not meant to replace a 3D modeler. For assembling your scene you should use a 3D package such as MODO or 3ds Max. Otherwise Placement is your only option.
